The House Is A Rockin’

Yesterday I told you about getting my mind blown with a game of Mindball at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. While that was one of the reasons we went to the museum, what I really wanted to see was an exhibit called The White House: A Look Inside.

The White House In Miniature

Traveling the country is a 1:12 inch scale replica of that famous building located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Created by John and Jan Zweifel, this miniature White House is the result of over 600,000 man hours over 32 years and at least a million dollars.

Every micrometer of this 60 X 13 foot building is obviously painstakingly detailed completely down to hand carved furniture, crystal chandeliers and painting replicas. The  rooms are lit, there is fire in the fireplace, working TVs and clocks, a movie playing in the First Family’s Theater and the little guards move their heads as if they’re constantly on surveillance. If this were my baby, I would have put little sunglasses on the guards, Secret Service style. One thing’s for sure, this house is definitely a rockin’! It’s gorgeous!

The museum was adamant about the “no photography” rule, but I was able to find this video on YouTube showing some of the details. Give it a look-see if you so desire!

Still here? Good.

As we walked through the exhibit with jaws dropped, I couldn’t help but be in awe of the magnificence of this miniature building. Particularly since I tried to make a dollhouse once and it looked like this.

My Rockin' (ok, rickety) House!

Yeah, I know. Not so good. I was never even able to get the roof on the thing because either I can’t cut wood or I can’t measure correctly. Either way, I know the amount of time and concentration I put into my piece of junk miniature house. I can’t even imagine the psychosis skill involved in making something on scheme as grand as The White House.

The exhibit was captivating, even with the bickering couple in front of us with two whiny kids, both in desperate need of diaper changes. If The White House: A Look Inside ever comes around by you, DO bother knockin’. It’s really something to see.

That’s amazing. Do you know whose administration the house was built to represent?

Hi Bev,

I want to say that I read somewhere that it was Ford’s administration, but they have made decorative updates to represent each following administration. Thanks for stopping by! Jessica

Totally cool! I would love to see that … I’ll have to check & find out if it is coming to the Dallas/FW area. Now, for the record I think the dollhouse that YOU made is pretty cool.
I’m so impressed that the Rock Chick is a proficient builder.
