Boogie Woogie Flu

Sometimes there really is a silver lining in every cloud.

H1N1

H1N1

Last Friday, two of my kids, the hubby and I were diagnosed with the flu. Not The Boogie Woogie Flu. The pandemic, panic inducing H1N1 flu, which does come accompanied by plenty of boogies, trust me. We were given Tamiflu and told to rest, drink plenty of fluids, not to hesitate in seeking emergency care should we experience any difficulty breathing and to basically stay the hell away from everyone.

The Swine Flu wasn’t pleasant, but we all agreed we had been sicker at one time or another. It may have been a milder strain or the Tamiflu, but even my son who has asthma never got into any type of distressful respiratory situation. The worst thing about it is the coughing and the strain it’s put on my back. It hurts to walk. Talk about a rockin’ pneumonia! Ouch!

So what’s the silver lining? The staying away from everyone, of course!

Our lives lately have been so topsy-turvy, running from here to there to take care of extended family members, jobs, sports practices, rehearsals and doctor’s visits that there seemed to be no time in the day left to even breathe. This week of quarantine has done wonders for all of us. Seriously.

We napped and caught up on some much needed rest and DVR’d TV shows. We played some games and I got to spend some time with one of my favorite friends, Mr. Bubble. The Bubble and I caught up on neglected blogs, stacks of unread magazines and a good book.

Devil Bones

Devil Bones

I think Devil Bones is the 11th book in the Temperance Brennan series. Tempe is a forensic anthropologist and you may recognize this character from the popular FOX TV show “Bones”. I love the books. Don’t care much for the show.

I had read some reviews that weren’t so complimentary about this episode in the series. It was perhaps a little more detailed than the previous books and Tempe seemed to be in more of a state of personal turmoil than normal. An alcoholic, she succumbs to her temptations in this episode after the sudden death of a friend and co-worker. She also seems to be struggling with every relationship she has, whether it be personal or professional. Still, the character is comfortable. If you’ve read the previous books, Tempe becomes somewhat of a friend to the reader and I admire the consistency in the personality of the character, happy or sad. As a Kathy Reichs fan, Devil Bones didn’t disappoint.

Today will be my first day returning to society. I have a million things to do including buying some Halloween costumes and candy (we really haven’t gone anywhere in a week! Better late than never, I suppose!) and hopefully, to see my friend, The Big BahUna, play an acoustic gig tonight. Acoustic gigs are good for rock chicks with back pain. More treat than trick, which is exactly what I need.

Wishing all of you a Happy Halloween!

I’m glad to hear that you are all better. I like your “half glass full” philosophy to being quarantined. Although I hate being sick, I do like the part where I get to veg in bed/on the couch to watch TV.
